As the route for the 20th Raid de Himalaya will be disclosed a month in advance, there will be ample opportunity for a recce of certain Legs.
All Legs are accessible for a recce. However, certain Legs may require Inner Line permits from the Army and Civil authorities.
It is advised that you do the recce of all four Legs, which will take you about five days if you are starting from outside Himachal. Budget for it accordingly.
The distance covered on the recce can vary from 1,000 km to 3,000 km depending on the route you take. Depending on the vehicle you use, assume that as far as fuel is concerned the average will only be about 50 percent of what you are normally getting. Work out your budget accordingly. Leg 2 onwards, it is highly recommended that you take along one other vehicle at the very least to rescue you if you break down or get stuck. Ideally this could be another participant or team member if you wish to reduce costs.
Plan a fuel range for 250 km for each vehicle. On the Raid, our fuel tankers will save you this bother but on the recce you are on your own!
You will get an idea of how much fuel you will need for the event from this exercise.
Hotels in Himachal and Ladakh tend to be in the Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 4,000 per room per night range. You will encounter cheaper accommodation in the tented camps along the way.
On the Raid, your accommodation is looked after by us.
A wide variety of food is available on the entire route. On the recce, you can research eateries.
On the Raid, we will provide food only at those places where none is available. In Leh and Kargil, your choice will lead you to the right place!
Permits are normally not charged for but getting them means staying an extra day in Leh. However, as the route is not final as yet, you need to watch this space for updates. Most probably permits may not be required at all for Indians.
During the Raid, all the permits are arranged by Himalayan Motorsport so, provided your paperwork is complete by the requisite time, you have nothing to worry about.
The cost of spares used is also impossible to compute as no two drivers will necessarily destroy the same parts! If you plan to attack the stages ruthlessly, tyres will definitely need to be there in plenty and suspension units too. However, there are lots of participants who do the Raid with six tyres and one set of shocks! They win too.

With every running of the Raid, service has been critical in deciding who has won. So it will be with this edition of the Raid de Himalaya. Once the final reconnaissance is over, only then will the Service Plan be available.
The minimum requirements for service appear to be two vehicles. From our experience, each such vehicle will cost the competitor Rs. 60,000 for fuel and service crew to run. This is merely an indicative figure. By sharing vehicles, the cost to individual competitors may be brought down.
However, the basic requirements remain the same as before. These are reiterated below
All service vehicles will be required to pay a fee of Rs. 1,000 per vehicle.
All Service crew will wear an ID with their photograph provided during the entire duration of the event. All service personnel will be provided this ID on the payment of Rs. 1,000 per driver/ mechanic. This is applicable to the drivers of all hired vehicles as well. If staying at a camp and wishing to avail the facilities, each service crew member will be charged an additional fee which shall be communicated at the start of the Raid.
